Loew's Jersey (photos here) screened a make/remake double feature of the 1951 sci-fi classic The Thing From Another World and the 1982 John Carpenter version, simply titled The Thing. While the two movies differ significantly in plot --- Carpenter's follows the John Campbell story more closely than the first film does --- the biggest difference lies in their atmosphere. The original shivers with Cold War hysteria and skepticism about the morality of science. The 1982 version simply shivers, as the malevolent force takes on the shape of anything it encounters, making it impossible for any of the characters to trust one another. Despite the paranoia of the post-war period, the early 1950s were a time of certainties, long since lost.
